Instruction by non-certified instructors is hit-and-miss. Some of the greatest sea kayaking instructors eschew certification--their methods may run counter to those used by established certification regimes, but work extremely well for them and for their students.

Other instructors are too poor to receive certification and should be avoided at all cost!

With any instructor, talk to former students. Were they patient? Did they have a great deal of concern for you as a student? Did you feel safe? Did they challenge you? Most importantly, did you learn?
