Yesterday was such a nice day that, after watching the Kingdome implode on TV, I went paddling out of the Everett public marina. It was only the second paddle of the season, so I wanted to concentrate on refreshing my techniques and such while still making it to Hat Island and back.
Halfway there, I came by a gray whale about 200 yards to starboard (they've been reported in the area for about three weeks now). It was going opposite my direction, I was still 'fresh', and it was some distance off, so I told myself I'd catch it on the return leg of the trip.
Of course, when I came by a couple hours later, there were no whales to be seen!
Lesson learned: If you want to chase after whales, do it when you see them, not when it's theoretically more convenient.
