Help selecting kids boats

I have 9 and 11 year old boys. We have dinked around on a small section of a pritty calm bay, the older boy in one boat and the younger one in a tandem boat. We have Folbot boats which are centuries old. We want to get new boats for all of us this year. I need to be able to car top the boats, so my rule is no more than 45 lbs. We are all light weights - 120 lbs, 80 lbs and 65 lbs. We will want to expand our calm water expiditions and really go exploring for day trips only, so storage is not an issue. Ease of paddling and control are major issues. There is so much to select from. We are considering a Cobra siton for the older son, but have never tried it. How should we proceed? What would you look at? When should we buy boats? Spring? Summer? Should we really test drive them? Are there any used boats? Help!!!
