Start with a comfortable pair of gloves. Worry about protecting your hands from the water in the event of capsize and less about the wind. Next buy a pair of lightweight pogies and attach just one to your stick. If your hands start getting cold, stick one hand in the pogie, paddle for a while, then switch hands. If neither hand needs it, just let it dangle between them. It doesn't eliminate the clostrophobic feel of pogies, but goes a long way. In the event of needing a sudden brace or extended paddle roll, you only have 1 hand to worry about getting out of the pogie. You'll need to have the ends of the pogie loosly fastened so that it slides easily over the root of your greenland blades.
The "spare" pogie makes an excellent water bottle holder on your deck if you fasten it around a deck bungie.

I have a paddling partner that uses these, but she uses a wax on her paddle to stop the slippery feeling.
Remember "light weight" pogies. I've seen some heavy neoprene pogies that weigh a ton when wet. Go for something like lightweight haypolon . They do just as well at keeping your hands warm, without the weight.
