I am exploring the feasibility of a major three-day KayakFest at the Convention Center on San Diego Bay. We'd have exhibits by kayak makers and accessory manufacturers, free demos on the Bay, races for various age groups, a nighttime parade of kayaks (with lights!) on the Bay and even a progressive dinner (appetizers at Seaport Village; then main course across the bay at Coronado; then back across the Bay behind the Convention Center for dessert and an open-air concert). We'll have fishing contests off Pt. Loma (yellowtail and seabass) and on SD Bay and Mission Bay for the meeker among us!
After KayakFest we'd offer 3-, 5- and 10-day kayak trips on the Sea of Cortez/Baja for all interested parties. Whattaya say, fellow kayaking dudes and dudettes? I'd like your input about the idea, time of year you think would be best (I'm thinking Memorial Day weekend) and any other events or exhibitor ideas that could be added. The Port of San Diego has the cash I'm pretty sure but I need a show of interest before making a formal proposal. We have a lot of hotels/motels in SD now so the Fest should be affordable to all.
