I have paddled some in the actual Outer Banks and more recently have moved my trips further down the NC coast to the Beaufort/Morehead City area. The paddling opportunities in the Beaufort area seem to be endless. You can paddle from Harkers Island down to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. You can paddle out of downtown Beaufort out to Shackleford Island and see the wild horses. My personal favorite is a bit further down the road in Swansboro. There is a wonderful shop (Barrier Island Kayaks (www.barrierislandkayaks.com), Lamar, owner, that will give access to Bear Island. There is tons of protected waters via the intercoastal waterway and bays and sounds and beautiful uninhabited islands to explore. Having been to the Outer Banks, I find them too developed and very little protected waters to paddle.
