I have two girls ages 9 and 12. Both have gone Kayaking. In general we do not like them to go in hard shell Kayaks by themselves, they use very stable inflateables, only in very calm conditions. Both of them have been out in our two-person kayak with one of us. We have been teaching them how to re-enter the inflateables and they can now flip over and re-enter eaiser than their mom or I can. We think that it is important to teach safety and seamanship at this point in their lives. Beacuse we also sail, I think Kayaking has taught them greater respect for being on the water, than many other kids who have always been on big boats only. If your children are a little older than mine are the sea scouts provide truely wonderful programs, at least here in Chicago on Lake Michigan.
