Mike - wow, you do need a vacation after those 18 hour work days. Working in the computer software field I'll be very happy when the calendar hits 1/2/2000 and we Y2K behind us.
Although it sure isn't as warm as Southern California, I'd suggest you consider the San Francisco area too. About 50% closer drive from Puget Sound than L.A. is. Many beautiful and easy places to paddle on San Francisco Bay and Tomales Bay (less than an hour north of S.F.), at least 5 very good kayak outfitters that I know of (and I've only gotten into kayaking in the last 4 months). And a LOT more enjoyable non-kayaking activities available here (Admittedly I have the typical Northern Californian's superiority complex over our neighbors to the south!)
Outfitters I know of include California Canoe and Kayak (in Oakland and Halfmoon Bay), Sea Trek in Sausalito, and Blue Waters and Tamal Saka on Tomales Bay. All have web sites.
Napa and Sonoma County winery areas are great and uncrowded in the winter season too.
Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy your well-deserved vacation.
Peter (remove the NS from the beginning of my email address if you want to email me)
