Malcom,

While I was living in Puerto Rico years ago my neighbor crawled into bed only to rocket back out. Seems the scorpion in question took a dislike to being sat on and let him know about it with a series of painful jabs. His first reaction was that his wife had left pins on the bed from a sewing project. He said it was no worse than bee stings. Being in the same area of the world I presume the species you saw would be similar. Watch the large centepedes though. A lady in the neighborhood was bit by one and spent two weeks in the hospital. Fortunately they are mostly nocturnal.
