I read an article last night in the gear guide for this winter "canoe $ kayak mag?) about some lakes in Canada that are exceptionally clear due to lack of life in them from acid rain...
Also, I know where there is a small lake in Oregon, on Mt Hood near Timothy lake off of Hwy 26, that is truly amazing. It's called Little Crater Lake. It's too small to paddle on, only about 50' across. I think it was formed by a volcano vent. The lake is about 125' deep if I remember right. It's spring fed with REALLY cold water, about 35 degrees.
What is so amazing is that when you stand on the edge and look (straight) down, the bottom is clearly visible. Every rock, every ledge. There is a large fir tree in it, and the top is several feet under the water. I have never seen water so clear. I guss it's too cold for fish. If you live out here and are passing through Hwy 26 it's worth a stop.
