Luther Marsh is my favourite day trip in southern Ontario. This gives me the feeling of wilderness without getting too far from home. It’s about a hour drive for me, and I put in at the Conservation Area ($3.25 day user fee but not expensive when you consider it goes to the upkeep of the area). There’s no camping or swimming so it is never busy, except for cyclists using the bike trails and a few hikers/birdwatchers. I can paddle the 3,500 acre lake for several hours in either open water, treed marshy areas or along the edge of a bog without seeing more than the occasional canoeist. The wildlife is great, nesting ospreys, a heronry, all kinds of waterfowl, etc. My favourite memory is of sitting in the kayak near an island and being covered with bright blue-bodied damselflies (blue darners). They just hovered and landed for several minutes, iridescent and so fragile. I felt like St. Francis! Other good times include watching the ospreys fishing, paddling quietly by a deer drinking at the shore and having lunch with 20 or so Tiger Swallowtail butterflies settling on the shore near my feet. The lake is shallow enough that it can blow up quite a decent chop in a very short time, with short steep waves and a heck of a headwind. The only time I won’t paddle there is in the hunting season. I’ve hiked the Luther Marsh area and the new bike trails are very good but certain seasons bring their challenges, like deer fly and mosquitoes! I’d rather be on the water.
