I thought that aerobic exercise was from 70-85% of your maximum heart rate, and anaerobic was above 85%? Not really that important but I'm curious.

I saw an article in one of the kayaking magazines in which they tested or showed new products. One product was a pair of shorts with a special zipper so that women could answer the call of nature while in the cockpit, in much the same manner as men do. Not being female, I read the blurb, filed it in my brain and didn't really think about it again until now. I have been cleaning and reorganizing my house (It's a yearly thing!!)and I dug out a box of old magazines so I will see if I can find the article.

On the food topic, my brother and I did a trip on Harrison Lake in B.C. and we paddled for three days doing about 20 miles the first day, 30 the second and 10 the third. I took note of the food we ate on the second day and figured out the caloric content when I got home. My figuring says we ate about 6000 calories on the second day alone!! I think I drank about 4 litres (1 gallon) of water. Most of the second day was spent in the boat. We ate continually and then had a huge evening meal.

We didn't eat this much on the first or third day and I think that it was a cycle of under eat/over eat as our bodies adjusted to the physical strain. This cycle probably would have levelled out on a longer trip until each day was about the same.

I also read somewhere that at the turn of the last century the average intake for an adult male in North America was about 6000-7000 calories. This was a result of a longer work day and far less leisure time.

In keeping with tradition, I'm figuring that most of you American kayakers probably managed to eat this amount yesterday!! We Canadians did it last month on our turkey day!!

Happy Thanksgiving, Ian
