Always if possible try before you buy, another word of wisdom is the Demo Day that kayak shoppes offer, its fun. Frankly I prefer a boat for a child that develops confidence and is versatile, one they can handle and grwo with. My choice has been to a craft such as a wilderness systems picolo, its a great boat and can be used ina host of situations, , my son has paddled siton tops and really does not like them, they are sluggish and sometimes hard for a child. Remember the key is to get a boat that offers them an opportunity to explore and more improtant explore with them..Lee
