I got several comments on that story from the local kayak club memebers who normally find that area of the river boring and enjoyed reading it through a newbie's eyes. Gray and drizzly can also make for a great paddle.
I've paddled 3 different sections of the Potomac so far, and the trip reports have gotten me recommendations for 2 or 3 more sections. Someone usually replies with a little bit of history about the area I paddled, which even adds more to the next visit to that area. Last night I learned this about 3 Sisters Island:
"And a nice Indian legend about where the name came from, they are three maidens who went out in their canoes to get revenge on an enemy on the other side of the river, but never made it and become those boulders."
I also found out the "gang signs" were actually put there by local paddle and rowing teams (except the Ken Starr one).
Looking forward to hearing your trip report from today!
