Many people think that there is something magical about chinkuchi/ki/hara, but there isn't. It is all body mechanics. Good body mechanics serve two purposes; 1- to condition the muscles to work in the correct order and combination, and 2 to eliminate the inefficiency and wasted effort in an activity.
I don't know if you tried the method I mentioned for people who have trouble pulling themselfs onto the kayak deck when executing a paddle float recovery. Actually I think you started the thread. Nobody responded so I figured not too many tried it. It is just body mechanics. I can have a person sit on my back, effectively doubling my weight, and do this technique on the carpet in my living room. (I tried it.) So, no matter how little upper body strength they have they can do it too.
Good body mechanics can be improved at any age and fitness level. Think of it like this. If you are lying on the floor there are many ways to get up. You are just going to use the most efficient!

P.S.- I'm not exactly a spring chicken either. P.P.S.- You know your getting old when the mothers start looking better than the daughters!
