hi pete, i liked your analysis about using just shoulders stopping the leverage. A friend and I have decided to put in some consistant paddling sessions. The goal of course to become sea kayak gods, or at the very least get high on lactic acid. Your're right on about it not being intuitive to using ones entire body. I took a stroke clinic a couple years ago, the fellow said most people paddle way too fast and don't get the most out of each stroke. As a training technique I'm slowing my cadence down and trying to get maximum pull right when the blade is totally submerged. From my experience teaching basic kayaking I find most folks apply maximum effort at mid point and then drag the blade too far back, when they start using their torso the blade still drags too far back. This burst-glide-burst-glide technique isn't very efficient but I'm finding that it builds up the muscles that have to do the work any way, and teaches those and other muscles where and when to relax. I figure it's more important what the lower torso is doing than whether the paddle is vertical or more relaxed.
