Hi Wes,
The Anacostia is one of our "forgotten" rivers. While the Potomac enjoys much of the spotlight as it winds it way through the western and southern sides of the US capital, the Anacotia bordering the eastern side is ignored.
The Potomac has it's problems too. But has the ability to *flush* itself out. The Anacostia blocks all surface trash at the railroad bridge, so anything that plops in along the 6 or so miles of shore or it's tributaries, tends to stay in the river.
I think one of the reasons it is ignored is because it passes through a shady part of DC. A short strip of the river has shanties built by homeless people. The Potomac goes through several "clean ups" during the year, while I've never heard of one for the Anacostia. Also, "shady" is other peoples description of the area, not mine. Everyone I've encountered along the river (including some of the homeless folks) seem very polite,
Plastic is by far the most prolific type of trash I've seen on any of the local rivers. It takes forever to degrade and floats high in the water so it is carried with the slightest breeze. I guess it's better than the glass bottles of yesteryear, but still....
