Paddling/Serive Trip in Baja

Eco-tourism has become a very popular activity for thousands of people all over the world with both positive and negative effects. It has always been the goal of the Global Classroom to be of service to those communities in which we travel, whether it be through monetary donations or by contributing labor, skills and educational programs. The Global Classroom has recently teamed up with a private ecological center and the newly formed park service, based in Loreto, Baja California, to help assist with problems associated with over use of area beaches. With some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, these islands are visited by as many as 1,000 tourist each week but have no toilet facilities. In March 1999, The Global Classroom donated materials and labor needed to create Baja's first "State of the Art" composting toilet system. With technical support from Sustainable Strategies of Concord, MA, and the help of volunteers, local students and passers by, the system was built in just 8 days. This "bio-toilet" is constructed of materials found locally; it will last for decades and requires minimal maintenance. We are looking for six motivated people who would like to join us in the Baja to build another composting toilet for the park service in Loreto. For those willing to be left with us on a beautiful deserted island to build these desperately needed units, there will be added benefits beyond the usual paddling and playing that comes with the Baja trips. Possibilities may include scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing and much more. Project dates: March 3-11. Costs $1475 including airfare and equiptment.
