Interesting that you mention the "design" of the whales body for its environment. One of the most clear examples I ever saw of that [besides the Whales at Mystic Aquarium] was out at East Hampton. It was a freshly caught Mako of good size, quite dead too. At any rate, walking down the pier I passed the Mako which was layed out on the table, its nose pointing in my direction. It was here, slowly walking around the nose of the Mako that I was amazed at the sculptural design of it. Between highlight, shadow, and reflected shadow it was miraculous. Every line of its greater body coming to this one {hydrodynamic?] point with the most subtle curves and planes. It was one of those moments when you appreciate the majesty of evolution.
Incidentaly, no one picture wouldve conveyed it had I a camera on me. It was that subtle. Anyway, the whale story was a terrific way to start my day... and coffee.
