The same comparison can be made with sea kayakers and whitewater kayakers. The sea kayaker can generally feel something more spiritual, where a whitewater kayaker gets an intense physical thrill. I think mountaineering and rock climbing can be compared in the same way. I do both, but I only get that intense spiritual rush when I've climbed a peak, and the "view from the top" makes it so intense. Rock climbing is rewarding too, but not really in the same deep, spiritual way.
I can't speak for an atheist or agnostic point of view, but I'd think it would be hard to not get something spiritual out of paddling.
Darn it! I was going to stay home tomorrow to work on my custom glass seat and now I want to go paddling instead!
