Thanks folks,
I'd doubt I'd pull something off like that by myself, even late into the season with a heaping amount of miles aquired. Who really wants to be that isolated. Still the whale sighting is a seductive challenge. I think some very good alternatives were mentioned in the preceding posts.
Glassing from shore with my spotter has been a pastime of mine. Aside form Herons, Terns and the like, its always been a fascination to see how far out to sea one can make out an object. To date, its the Block Island Lighthouse from Harkness Memorial Park in New London. The lights well well over 20 miles out and sits atop 150' cliffs.
I'd give anything to obtain the elevation tables for measuring distance of objects partially covered by the horizon. Apparently they are used in concert with a sextant or sedonometer[spelling?]. Essentially, it s measuring the known height of an object. Say its 100 feet, but 50' of it is below the horizon, with that said , there are tables of some sort to calculate a rough estimate then of the distance, Nauticaly people use it in navigationon anything from lighthouses to ship masts. Any info here would be great.
Again thanks for the responses.
Pete
