Pete,
This is a long trip, 24 miles, for anyone in one stretch. 12 miles out is a long way if something happens.
I have done 20 miles in one stint, once, and that was on a lake. It was pretty tough. Started at 9:00 am and stopped at 4:30 pm.
In the Quadra Island post (OH NO, not that again!) I think the original post said that these people were very tired and sore after a six mile crossing and after an eleven mile crossing. You will not be able to get out and rest or stretch for 24 miles!
If you were very tired after the trip out whale watching probably wouldn't be as enjoyable. Plus, going out with whale watching as a goal would be far easier than returning when you are tired and have no goal to look forward to.
You could use this as a goal however and build up your skills and endurance to do this trip in the future.
