I was hiking in Cape Scott Provincial Park this year and mentioned to the park operator (they got rid of the park rangers as a cost cutting measure) that I was thinking of kayaking around from San Joseph Bay to Nels Bight. He said that he had done this several times when he was a park ranger here. He said that as he went past the lighthouse a large group of sealions charged him and turned off at the last second. I had never heard of this before and he jokingly said that it was in response to the fact that in the 1950's the Department of Fisheries and Oceans sent a boat out there with a 50 caliber machinegun on the bow, and pretty much wiped out the sealions!
We sat at the lighthouse and used binoculars to watch 50-60 sealions play on an offshore breaker in the area he said it happened. They would body surf down the wave face and, just as it was about to break over them, they would leap backwards over the wave. Couldn't imagine shooting one, except maybe with a camera.
