Thanks for the interesting and informative commentary from all who responded. A couple of additional points of clarification:
(1) Prior to the trip, I did post a question (here) asking if anyone had ever heard of or had experiences with the outfitter. Perhaps that fact that no one responded should have been a sign.
(2) I did ask about approx. daily paddling length prior to the trip. Their reply was that they averaged about five nautical miles per day. (I fully realize that weather, etc. can create some changes in schedules/distances.)
(3) The outfitter confirmed that their guides had safety training and appropriate safety equipment.
(4) Prior to posting here, I sent a much more detailed listing of my "issues/observations" directly to the owner/guide for Coastal Spirits.
(5) Next time around, I will be much more assertive regarding safety issues, etc. before leaving the beach. There were a couple of times when I could/should have spoken up, but didn't want to be viewed as a "whiner." In retrospect, uninjured whiner is preferable to injured macho-man. :-)
(6) I truly appreciate all those who have responded and their constructive/thoughtful comments...we've all learned...that's what makes this a wonderful resource to all who choose to participate.
