Some thoughts from down here (and I aplogize if I'm saying things you already knew):
1. pay attention to the weather and the typical conditions expected, ie, wind picks up in late morning hours, swells from out of whatever direction.
2. pick the best time to start to minimize fighting currents. What are the expected currents in worst case scenarios and figure it in when crossing
3. plan on fog as a exercise to do some compass navigation work, that way, if there is fog, you have things well in hand. Your compass can be as simple as a handheld under a bunie cord or taped to the deck (make sure there's no metal near that could cuase the needle to deflect). Not to start a flame, but don't relay on anything powered like a GPS, but definitely take the compass and use it.
4. not to imply anything negative, but load up the yak with weight and paddle it around in rough water to get a feel of how it acts. You can get a feel of the transit time from that exercise. That you go on paddle trips means you have some experience in this already, so maybe you should ignore what I just said.
5. be confident, crossings are no big thing really, it's just the next step in paddling around.
hope this helps. 5 miles is an hour of great paddling and saves you some hassles and money!
