It's down to the wire...huh? How's your daughter???
: No anti-diarrheal tabs. Couldn't the water purification pills I'm taking
: serve as well as the Chlorox if I dissolved one to make a strong solution
: and rinsed the filter that way?Afraid not, the bacterial growth will overwhelm the water purification solution residue. I tried sevral types on Lake Powell water and went back to the chlorine solution for its effectiveness, very low cost and ease of use. WARNING: use only regular Clorox or Purex (one the label will be directions for use for water disinfection). You can use any tiny container if such containers are hard to find.
When the Sweetwater is clogging up, it'll be hard to pump, and water will start to squirt out from the pump handle area and filter thread. In as little as 8 hours the bacterial growth could be intense, some species within the genus Pseudomonas will actually break down the filter media at the surface and penetrate into the medium a mm or more. In some waters where there's a higher amount level of BOD, COD, TOC and /or TPH (Biological Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Total Organic Compounds, Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons) the water's content is a food source for the bacteria, the media is a growth substrate favoring growth. The acronyms might sound like some kind of haz waste site but as an example of a lake body with high levels is Lake Powell, Lake Mead and generally, the lower Colorado River...an organic soup for bacterial growth. Nothing worse then constantly screwing with the water filter...paddling the 1900 miles of the Lake Powell shoreline I went though 2 Sweetwater filters till I traded the pump for the ever-trusty Katadyn Pocket Pump on a resupply.
Hey if time runs out, from the two of us and some friends who have been kept up to speed on the venture, enjoy! There's no need to wish you luck, your skills and wisdom will get you through any challenges.
