: Damn, that's a lot of stuff, but you'll be prepared. The one thing I see
: missing has to do with the Swettwater pump.: The Guardian has a synthetic filter element designed to be abraded, but these
: element types are generally designed to be eaily abraded and partly to
: reduce pump pressure (reduced force needed, reduced stress on the pump
: handle and reduced plenum chamber pressures). I suspect its a way to keep
: a income source guranteed to the company, too. In any case, one important
: thing is to do to extend the life of the filter and to avoid the hassle of
: continual cleaning is to reduce or prevent bacterail growth in the filter
: element. Believe it or not, the bacterial growth is the overwhelming cause
: of filter plugging. More pluggings, mean more cleanings, which means
: reduced filter life-you got the idea.: I would take along a 2 ounce plastic squeeze bottle with the flip-top drip
: nozzle filled with regular Clorox or Purex bleach (which is 3% solution).
: The plstic bottle is small, 1.5 cm by 3.5 cm, is less then a dolaar US and
: can be found at REI or any walmart. After pumping, open the filter and
: drip a couple drops in there, screw closed, and pump once to circulate the
: chlorine.: Also, for a Nalgene bottle of 32 ounce size, after filtering a bottle, 1-2
: drops (and a 10 minute contact time before drinking) provides a chlorine
: residual suffiecient to inactivate any virus. All pumps are either
: filters, or varying levels of microfiltration. Water purification requires
: chemical treatment.: Just in case...do you have any anti-diarrheal tabs, too?
No anti-diarrheal tabs. Couldn't the water purification pills I'm taking serve as well as the Chlorox if I dissolved one to make a strong solution and rinsed the filter that way?
