Rob,
My prayers are with your daughter, you, and your family. Family must come first and your trip will seem even more special once your daughters health returns.
I had my kayak out for a 4 hour paddle on Sunday the paddle was most enjoyable. I was pleased at how well I was able to paddle against the current in the river that runs in front of my house. That was a concern of mine, I have about a half block walk to a put in across from the kids school but thought if fighting the current was a real bear it would take some of the fun out of it. I was able to paddle at a maintainable speed of 7 km/h against the current and 9 km/h with the current although the average current is reported to be 5 mph. I can't explain the speeds but that is what the GPS said. I will file a trip report in a day or two.
Right now I am a bit under the weather. After my 4 hour paddle my back was a little stiff, probably due to my makeshift seat, I guess I should have done some stretches after getting out of the kayak. I grabbed my paddle in one hand, stuffed all my gear into the cockpit of the kayak, lifted the kayak by the cockpit and started up the bank. My guess is somebody had their dog in the water where I launched and I didn't notice a puddle of wet mud as I carried the yak up the bank. I slipped and lost my footing, I didn't fall or drop the kayak but I wrenched my back. It took a great deal of painful effort to get the kayak up the bank and onto the van. Yesterday it was all I could do to crawl to the bathroom, to make matters worse every time I was on all fours the dog thought I wanted to play and he started to wrestle with me. Today is a little better and I can just walk again if I have enough Tylenol #3's in me. I have a physiotherapy appt. tomorrow so I hope I'll be on the mend soon. I hurt my back 15 years ago playing baseball and while I had minor re-occurances of pain since it has never been this bad again. If something like this was to happen in the boonies I would be in real trouble. I'd just have to hunker down and let it heal for a few days. Hopefully I'm back to 100% before my trip.
Just one suggestion regarding your trip list, I haven't gone over it in too much detail because it is still uncomfortable to sit for any length of time but may I suggest that you trade your enamel cup and bowl for plastic or lexan, food and drink cools very rapidly in enamel coated metal utensils. Dinners are too hot to hold because the metal transfers the heat, then all too soon they are too cold to enjoy. Also take along an insulated coffee mug with a lid, if you are weatherbound it's awful nice to enjoy a nice leisurly cup of tea around the fire that stays warm for a half hour or so while you sip on it and work on your journal, rather than having an enamel cup that is so hot it burns your lips one moment and is too cold to enjoy the next. Just a suggestion!
Give your daughter a hug from all us us. Our thoughts are with her!
Ken
