It's marketed as a "personal watercraft horn" in other words --jetski-- jetskiers I've seen wouldn't be able to use it while blasting around at 35mph. But works for me, stays attached to little waterproof flashlight and storm whistle. Occasionally in a class it toots as I clamber on the back deck demoing rescues.
Last winter I was paddling, 45degree water, air the same. With neoprene beanie and polartec beanie on my head I didn't hear the orange coast guard guys coming up to me to check on my safety equipment, "eh,eh, what's that ? My whistle? yes I"ve got one. You want to hear me blow it? Hmmm ok" So with one ear uncovered like a RCA dog I put the whistle to my lips pucker tight and blow, hands back on paddle as the waves rock around. I give one very hard blow and with the very cold air and my face chilled the whistle makes a valiant "tweet" before flying out with spittle streaming behind. "Thank you sir, have a nice day" and they were off. I felt like I had been given novacaine at the dentists and was asked to spit. Light bulb goes off--whistles are a hands on device like hand pumps, no good if hands want to be on paddle.
