I think if you are in this dilemma then it would be on the return leg of a trip that required a timely return. In other words there would be negative consequences for not going. I know some skilled and experienced paddlers that chose not to go for it for endorphin fixes.

So the weather you encountered is accurate to the forecast. Your judgement for what are comfortable conditions for you are essential to a paddling plan and a groups safety. Looks like your paddling partner and you need to designate whether a trip is a "A" trip or "B" trip. If there is disagreement over what is an "A" or "B" then it is only yours and the groups safety on the line. I don't think this is an area where trust of another persons judgement needs to be on the line.
