The first rule of paddling is: Don't go out if you are uncomfortable with the conditions.
3' waves look pretty darn big when you are in a kayak. They will block out your view of the horizon. Don't depend on what the weather report says. If it looks beyond your limits, it is beyond your limits. You will eventually become comfortable with bigger waves and harsher conditions. But, save your experiments for less risky conditions.
