i was actually pondering this while on the road this past few days (returning from kayaking in some of the lagoons around Eurkea, Ca) and came up with a possible answer. Possibly the good folks at Ritchie, knowing that the end user will have to adjust the magnets and calibrate the compass anyway, don't set up he compass card as we wold expect. If the card is printed with the north indicator not exactly aligned with the "north pole" of the magnet, then this would account for the variation. Most compasses are naturally aligned properly, but since this compass is designed to be used with calibration bars it wouldn't actually matter UNLESS you removed those calibration bars. I don't actually have any idea if this is what Ritchie was thinking of, but it seems to fit.
