As Jerry says - that won't work. I naturally decided the same thing you did and pulled the bars off to eliminate the problem. Unfortunately, when I got out my trusty Silva hand compass to check the reading the boat compass was even farther off than it had been. Believe me I didn't want to shell out another 40 or 50 bucks for a new compass but I finally that was the only option. (By the way, the original compass model was Ritchie's Angler)
