Noooooooooooooooooo
Don't remove the the bars or anything else. The big metallic bars, or metal balls (spheres of soft iron to be more precise) are to correct for the magentic field generated by a steel hulled boat. They're designed to allow the compass to be adjusted and tailored to compensate for the magnetic field of the boat. Every big chunk, and even not so big chunk of iron/steel generated its own magnetic field. As such the compass itself sometimes is not correctly alligned to magnetic north, because the steel hull will throw off the alignemt. Once the compass is installed it needs to be tuned by a professional adjuster. Removal of these bars/balls will negate any chance of tuning to magnetic north, so you will be destined to be forever lost. For too much information on boat compasses, Chapmans Piloting is a good source.
