There are a couple attributes of the seat I made that make it so comfortable:
1. It's relatively deep. The front edge is under the thigh, not just under the butt.
2. The slope up from butt to thigh is just the right angle to point your knees just where the ought to be; under the lip of the cockpit rim.
Before I latched onto the idea of copying the seat I already had, I was prepared to make a mold from a tray of sand with plastic over it. I knew the plastic would be full of wrinkles and would be difficult to make a smooth seat. However, another idea that occurred to me as I was writing this, is that you might be able to make a nice mold out of modeling clay. It would take a heck of a lot of clay, but you could build-up a sub-structure on a plywood base and pack the clay around it and give it a good butt-print. By using clay, I think you could really get a smooth surface. Then apply the mold release, lay on a few layers of glass, pop it off and you've got a mold for the final seat (and future seats). Might work.
