John, I've paddled from Bullfrog Marina down to Escalante Canyon and through all the side canyons of Escalante up to the upper end and back to Bullfrog.
I did this in March which usually has wonderful weather, very few people and motor boats, but the lake levels are lower than in the summer, which makes hiking from the upper ends of canyons a bit more difficult.
As the water level drops, the lake recedes from the ends of the side canyons and leaves you with more camping places but a lot more mud and brush through witch to hike.
Summer will often be a crowded trip with lots of motor boats and fewer camping spots.
A great road access is across the Hole-in-the Wall road, down a 600 foot steep slope to the lake. This is a truck or 4x4 road usually. Where you enter the lake is right next to Escalante Canyon and right across from the San Juan River arm. both are great places to paddle.
I have [paddles some around Wahweap but did't enjoy it as much as the center area.
Boater's Guide to Lake Powell (Michael Kelsey) is a good book with good camping spots marked.Adventurous Travelers Book store on the web has good maps and books.
Take your sunscreen. : )
