I have never really thought in terms of how far to stay away from ships - 100 yards is probably ample as long as you pay attention - the real danger comes from thinking that you can cross in front of one!! Rule of thumb - just don't do it. The big ships move alot faster than you think when you're sitting in a kayak, probably something to do with relative size.
The foldup, aluminum foil type of radar deflector would be fine. Its use is for those foggy times that you can't see anything and neither can anyone else. At other times it can be stowed out of the way.
Boat Channel is right beside Winter Cove Provincial Park but I don't think they allow camping right there but there are lots of other places in the area. It does provide picnicing and bathroom facilities and a nice high point of land for viewing. The view includes one east all the way to Mount Baker.
Try this for more info. http://www.tbc.gov.bc.ca/tourism/tourismhome.html - I'll try to get to work below too.
