My wife and I have been to the Outer Banks several times and love it. We go to Corolla, which is on the north end, near where the road turns into beach. There is a nice launch at the Whale Head club on the sound side. It's very marshy with a ton of little islets. Egrets, I think and Ospreys are everywhere. It's very shallow, less than 4', all the way out to the boating lanes. There are both day and night time eco tours, if you're into that. We also drove out several miles on the beach till we found a place to put in on the ocean side. The waves can get quite large, so getting out thru them is wild. Getting back to the beach can be rough, we were both dumped several times. The beaches and dunes are enormous and there are still a few wild horses, not as many as there used to be. You should have a great time.
