Elk Island National Park is situated about a half hour drive east of Edmonton, Alberta along the Yellowhead Highway, also known as Highway 16. This area is a nature preserve that captures the Canadian Prairies as they were found when white man showed up in the area some 250 years ago. The area has original prairie grasses and loads of wildlife, all protected by Federal manadate. Bison roam free within the confines of the park, including areas where you can pitch a tent and paddle on the lakes. The lakes contain all kinds of aquatic life, including otter, beaver, muskrat, waterfowl and moose. It is a very photogenic place to paddle. Astotin Lake has been set aside for paddlers in either canoe or kayak only.
Islet Lake is likewise, a half hour drive east of Edmonton along the Sherwood Park Freeway then on via Wye Road. The lake is located within the boundaries of the Blackfoot Recreation Area of Alberta. The lake cannot be used by power boaters and is similarily protected although there is hunting allowed for big game land animals. Islet Lake allows just enough water for a pleasant day paddle. Like Elk Island Park, the lands to the north of the area are untouched except for some areas where grazing is allowed. It is a much photographed lake, especially by yours truly.

If you ever come to Edmonton, let me know and I will arrange to take you out for a day paddle to either lake.
