: So to be clear, do good paddlers paddle up the fast parts of the river?
: Otherwise it sounds like they push themselves up with a pole, or wade and
: drag the boat, or use a kite-like sail? Internet search returns some
: strange hits for 'poling'...Good paddlers always paddle along the slower areas on fast water. Trying to paddle upstream of the fast sections is akin to bashing your head in with a baseball bat. I can't see poling upstream in fast water as being effective at all. Your only real choice is to pull your canoe upstream while wading in the water and that will most definitely be a cool experience on the Bow River. If you practice upstream paddling for a few weeks, I am sure you will build up nice muscles but you still won't get very far. I paddle upstream on the North Saskatchewan River often - takes me 3 hrs to paddle upstream and 1/2 hour to paddle back down to where I started and that is at moderate water levels. The Bow will be much worse because it is a much faster river.
