Sure sounds like fun! How about just taking all of us along?
Propane stoves are definitely less finicky than white gas; just turn the knob and light. If you're travelling close to civilization you should need to pack only the tank in use and 1 spare, then stop at the next hardware/discount store and replace them as needed.
A $500 dollar tent is more durable and of better quality than a cheaper tent (unless you're getting ripped off). Check Outside Online's gear guide archives for equipment recommendations and then decide how much use the tent is going to see over the next 10 years or so. I've used my Eureka Timberline Spring through Fall and like it just fine.
Sleeping bag - again, how much use is it going to get over the next 10 years? Any bag rated to 20 degreesF or so should do you fine in July. Campmor often has some on sale for as little as $60.
How late do you stay up at night? You'll probably have usable light until at least 10 at night in July. I'd probably just take a Mini Maglite or similar.
I usually take a lot of dried, just-add-boiling-water food so I generally pack a pot/teapot and a small skillet with folding handle.
Don't forget a visored hat, sunblock, sunglasses, reading material, water filter (if necessary), foam pad for the sleeping bag, bug dope (or head net), first aid supplies, etc., etc., etc.
One good thing - if you forget anything it sounds like you can stop and get it. Have fun and don't forget to drop us a line when you return!
