Circumnavigation of San Juan Island, Part 2
When I was heading up the hill to the campsite, I looked up and saw that there were vehicles in the site already. I also noticed a very familiar triple kayak, complete with the black walnut deck. Dale’s kayak was here! That meant that they were here. I asked if I could join them. They seemed happy to see me. After not getting much sleep they had decided to skip the first leg. They had tried to call me, but I didn’t go home after the Rendezvous. Dale got up early and went to the ferry. He couldn’t find me, so he drove onto the 6:15 ferry hoping to find me on the other side. When I didn’t show up, he drove to Snug Harbor. Shawn, Michelle, Dan, and Paula came across two ferries later (the one after mine). They drove to camp and got there about an hour before I did. They all figured I decided not to go on the trip, they had tried everything to get in touch with me but to no avail. It all worked out okay though. If they had contacted me, I would not have been able to do a complete circumnavigation. I had a good day’s solo paddle in beautiful weather and calm water, through one of the most scenic places on earth, and was still able to meet up with friends. They are friends now; shortly before the trip I had only spoken to them over the internet. By the end of the trip I did not want to say goodbye.
