In response to recent, well-deserved criticism, I'm following up with a report on my recent trip to Trinity Lake, CA.
Trinity Lake is located near Lake Shasta and the Trinity Alps wilderness. I had heard from an acquaintance that the area was ripe with paddling possibilities. First off, let me say that I combined goals here to work with a brief family vacation. I didn't have time to really go looking for every area nearby to find the best spots. What I did do was look over the literature they give out at the campsites, and talk to locals about areas to paddle. Trinity Lake was not the place they recommended for small self-powered craft. There were lots of powerboats. Some of the smaller tributaries had 5mph speed limits, and around sunset the entire lake seemed to clear out. At that point, it was beautiful and fun to paddle. I had an incredible 2-hour moonlight paddle on Saturday night, with only two boats passing within earshot.
The area most recommended nearby was Lewiston Lake, which is just below the dam for Trinity Lake. It's much smaller, narrower, and has an overall 10mph limit. It's also a big wildlife viewing area, which sounds much more kayak-friendly to me. The other areas I heard about were all very small lakes that would have to be portaged to, or sections of the Trinity River, which is whitewater (not too appropriate for my wooden Pygmy Arctic Tern. So without further ado, here's a couple of pictures. If I do get back to Lewiston Lake, I'll post a quick report.
