Sea Kayak Trips Bulletin Board
The BIG ditch

I know this is the least little bit off topic, but to stir things up a little, well, what the heck?
One of the nice things with winter is that you can research and think about trips a bit. This week, I've been thinking about the Grand Canyon.
I know that there's a five-year waiting list plus to do private parties down the river, but if I'm going to do it, well, maybe I'd better get on it.
On RBP there was some discussion that open canoes frequently run the big ditch. Usually, when you think about the Grand Canyon, you think inflatables, or maybe kayaks or dories. Those that take whitewater boats down it usually have to have a raft go along with them to haul gear.
The thought crosses my mind that if open canoes can make it down the Grand Canyon successfully, why wouldn't a fairly sturdy touring kayak, maybe of the plastic perusasion, be able to make it down there? I mean, now you'd have enough room to be self contained and not have to have a raft to carry all the stuff.
Does anybody know if anyone has tried this?
