It's an absolute blast! I have backpacked the island dozens of times, canoed there once, and last summer I kayaked it. I wouldn't chance the North Shore from Windigo to Todd Harbor unless you are very advanced paddlers with drysuits and lots of rolling expertise (just in case of winds/waves on a cliffy coast). OTOH, the north shore from McCargo Cove around Blake Point is incredibly pretty and protected although the paddle around Blake Point can be dicey when high winds and currents collide. The South shore from Rock Harbor to Moskey Basin is all quite protected (Caribou Island campground is real nice and has 2 shelters). The paddle around the south to Chippewa Harbor can be nasty, but at least the rocky shore there is more gently sloping.
Keep in mind that there is a limit on group size (I think it's 7) and they won't let more than that travel the same route. You'll need a stove as fires are permitted in only a few places. If you come from Grand Portage on the Voyager you can get dropped off at McCargo Cove and proceeed northeast along the island from there. Hope you go and have a great time. If you have more specific questions write or call the park (906-482-0984); many of the rangers kayak and can give you good advice.
