I have seen those transistor-radio-looking things that are actually just little amplifers. You could wear some cheap headphones and place one of those gadgets in a ziplock with a caulked hole for the headphone jack. I don't know what it would sound like with a plastic bag around the mic, but it might be a low-cost solution. If you dump, you'll only harm the cheap headphones.
