Sea Kayak Trips Bulletin Board

Great Memorial Day weekend

I've enjoyed reading about the various trips on this page, expecially in the winter when we're frozen in up here. Altho I do get to California and Baja each winter.

I just spent three wonderful days under blue sunny skies paddling in Resurrection Bay out of Seward, Alaska. Both sides of the Bay are abrupt mountains capped with glaciers and right now with snow cover down to the ocean in most places. A dozen of more eagles, puffins, muirs, guillemots, cormorants, varied gulls, oyster catchers and swallows after mosquitos.

Otters and sea lions cruising and eating and a sea lion haulout with a monstrous bull, a dozen adolescents and another 15 or so cows. Talked with a sailboat crew going by who saw orcas the day before. I've had them go under my kayak on other trips near here.

One shore has numerous beaches from winter wave/storm action, the other side is beautiful cliffs with pillow basalt formations, waterfalls, coves, inlets and sea caves. Three islands are in the middle of the Bay and at the end of the Bay you are on the Gulf of Alaska and can cross to Hawaii or Seattle if you have time.

The winds were light and variable. We can get a lot of strong winds and wet weather here. It is light enough to paddle at anytime of day or "night" now until about the first or second week of July.

Food was good, company was delighful and the camping was comfortable. All this less than a three hour drive from home. I'm a lucky man.

I get out about every week now and have trips from 2 to 15 days planned, mostly in wilderness or semi-wilderness conditions. When I learn how to post pictures, I'll add some with our scenery, tide water glaciers, ice bergs and hopefully some whales.
