I,m a shipsjointer partly retired from Coecles Harbor Marina, Shelter Island New York. I designed and built my new Kayak: 20 ft x 25 inch. out of 3 mm Okumme Ply, lapstrake, 35 lbs open cockpit one or two man depending on movable back and seats. Shelter Island is great place to Kayak as every road to the water has a launching ramp and the Island has many deep and long creeks and harbors. I kayaked around the island(20 miles) in 4 hours.
