The rivers in yellowstone park are closed for boat use. You are right they are pretty calm except for the waterfalls. The lakes are open. You need to get a YNP boat permit and an invasive species boat permit. It is a pretty regulated place but it is very nice. If you are going up through the Tetons their are some canoe/sea kayak friendly sections on the snake river. From the dam down to Pacific Creek is very user friendly. From Pacific Creek to Deadmans Bar is intermediate. Below Deadmans bar you can get in some swift tight channels that have sweepers so you only want experienced paddlers. The paddle from String Lake up to Leigh Lake is also very nice with just one short portage.
