One instruction technique I am testing out for friends learning to roll is to begin in very shallow water (prefer sandy bottom). I'll help them invert in water so shallow their shoulders rest on the bottom as they twist their torso so as to be chest to the sky, and I am lifting their head a little so it clears the surface. They can then plainly see where the paddle has to be at the outset of and during the sweep. At 90 degrees out they do their high brace, lay back and try to rotate up. I then increase the depth an inch at a time. For someone who is just not catching on, I think this has helped.
